No refueling has been allowed during the pit stops for one-seaters since 2010.
This regulation, though, might change in the next years.
FIA is considering the return of fuel stops for F1 one-seaters, which were outlawed back in 2010, mostly due to safety reasons. If these considerations become reality, then one-seaters will have smaller fuel tanks, will weigh less and there will be another parameter for the teams to take into account when planning their strategies.
This parameter, though, could turn into an advantage, if used right.
Jean Todt, president of FIA, has stated that the refueling debate has indeed been reopened and that he’d actually like to see fuel stops return.
He highlighted the vehicles’ increased weight matter and underlined that refueling could only have a positive effect on the sport, both spectacle and interest wise.
Now, regarding the cost, which as mentioned will be something that the teams will have to deal with, in order to purchase refueling equipment and to improve their vehicles using new, smaller fuel tanks, Todt said that it’s funny at best to talk about costs like these when it comes to F1 teams.
